For me personally, I demand that I incorporate a unison of philosphical mindsets in the forms of dualism and holism in order to provide the patient with professional behavior, an array of knowledge, and assistance. Each philosophical mindset (dualism, holism, and materialism) has advantages and simultaneous theoretical problems that come with it. For this reason, it is mandatory that two of the three be integrated into my daily behavior in order to supplement eachother. Then what would be the reason why dualism and holism are the two ideal philosophical mindsets I choose to integrate into my daily behaviors you might ask?
Before I give you my answer, allow me the option to briefly illustrate the advantages and theoretical flaws of dualism. I will begin with dualism which offers the notion that there is a distinction between the mind and the body for the individual. As for matters of importance I’m only going to define substance and behavior dualism due to the fact their definitions are beneficial to my overall argument. “The substance dualists notes that mind and body interact. The body affects thoughts, and thoughts affect the body.” (Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity. pg. 51) The interaction of the mind and body is the basis for dualism. The individual must incorporate the notion that the mind plays a role in crafting the behavior of an individual as behavior dualism suggests. “Behavior dualism suggests that all actions are composed of two parts, thinking, followed by doing. The body cannot act on its own because it is only a machine, so it must await commands from the mind.”(Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity. pg. 51) The importance within behavior dualism is the notion that there is an asymmetrical relationship between the mind and bod; the body remains dependent upon the mind. Both types of dualism (substance, behavior) illustrate an increased awareness by the individual that one’s mind plays a vital and crucial role within the result of a performance. The major theoretical flaw for dualism remains in the idea of how an immaterial objects such as one’s thoughts and ideas from one’s mind can influence and affect something material such as one’s body. Dualism is also responsible for the theoretical flaw of remaining unable to identify whre the existence of the mind remains. If the mind directly influences the body then one shouldn’t have a diffuculty locating the location of their mind.
Holism is the philosophical mindset which transitions from looking at an individual as composed of two independent parts such as mind and body, and begins to homogenize the notion of an individual into a more refined complete whole. The goal for holism is to satisfy five basic requirements which are accomplished when looking at individuals through the horizontal image of people comprised of a chart with sedentary and insight labeled on both axes. “The horizontal image of people satisfies five basic requirements of holism. This image eliminates mind and body, erases any line between physical and mental activity, and it redefines what counts as intelligent behavior. The crucial part of the image is that it depicts free, unpredictable, creative, sensitive, and insightful behavior as both sedentary and active.” (Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity. pg.117) Holism makes the transition from looking at the mind and body of the individual as independent parts to looking at the behavior and overall performance of the individual. Holism dismissed the notion that the mind and body interact independently, and confirms that insightful behavior can come in the forms of either sedentary or active behavior. Holism incorporates methods of analysis and differing techniques in order to correclty assess their patient. “They use distinctive techniques for diagnosis( e.g. , listening to patients’ stories), intervention (e.g. , going for meaning and habits), and assessment.”(Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity. pg. 134) Holism incorporates multiple techniques in order to correctly evaluate a patient based upon the notion that the individual should embody good habits and enriched meaning within their daily life.
Holism and dualism must both be incorporated by me in order to allow both mindsets to supplement each other where one has a flaw. The theoretical flaws of dualism are that the mind cannot be externally located, and if not then how can the influence of an immaterial object such as one’s mind affect one’s physical body. Holism serves as an excellent bridge between the two by eliminating the emphasis upon a distinction between mind and body and incorporates the notion of the individual being embodied as whole. Holism helps to create a new source of motivation and techniques for the individual when assessing a patient. I believe that behavior dualism has much signifigance within the notion that the mind and body interact dependently upon one another, but the conclusions drawn for a patient resulting from dualistic techniques don’t always appease the client. Holism adds the humanistic element to the client which dualism severely lacks. Holism supports and supplements dualistic techniques of the client such as looking for a group of partial causes as compared to a small set of causes which other techniques utilize. Holism also looks to the consciousness as well as the body while evaluating a patient as compared to deducing the problem be entirely from physiology, biochemistry, or anatomy causes. The combination of holism and dualistic tenchniques will be incorporated by myself in order to evaluate my patient with techniques which don’t neglect the importance of mind-body interaction, or the signifigance of understanding that an individual embody a lifestyle of good habits and imported meaning which will positively affect one’s behavior and overall performance.
